GPM Offer From Yelp! Here’s How This Client Did It

🎉 Congratulations on a GPM Offer from Yelp!

Congratulations to my client on their GPM offer from Yelp equivalent to $500K in the Bay Area 🎊

Challenges Faced

They were reaching final interview rounds but not converting them to offers, and the lack of feedbck were the most frustrating to them.

They also had a perception that the “odds were against them” due to the competitive market and candidate tool.

Shifting the Focus: From Technique to Mindset

Usually when I meet with clients 1:1, we work on continuing to refine interview techniques that we already worked on with the rest of the group.

But I recommended to this client that we worked on their mindset instead, because I was worried about their “odds were against me” perception that would prevent their true self to shine.

When we focus on lack, we would see more lack.

When we focus on abundance, we would see more abundance, and the way we act will come from that next-level.

Leadership Interview Framework: 3 Key Areas

Tactically, we also worked on our 3 part framework when it comes to leadership interviews:

  1. Competency: WHAT you have done in the past.
  2. Characters: WHO you are.
  3. Connection: Emotional connection with the interviewer.

Focusing on Character and Connection

When you deliberately focus on 2 and 3, you will naturally stand out since most candidates only focus on 1.

At the end of the day, interviews are not scientific, it is people having conversations.

And people remember feelings a lot better than data, so when you get interviewers to feel the feelings you want them to feel, they will remember you more.

Once a month, on the last Monday of the month, a small group PMs targeting L7-L9 roles gathers on Zoom to ask me and my partner Amit Saxena (ex Meta Director) anything.

What does "great" actually sound like at this level? How do you frame cross-org impact without sounding junior? What's the real difference between an L6 and an L7-L9 answer?

Nothing is off limits.

The next one is next Monday, would you like to join us?
